A SOPHISTICATED cannabis 'factory' was found in a former chicken shed at a Staffordshire farm, jurors heard.

Police officers found hundreds of cannabis plants in the shed at Ivetsey Bank, near Wheaton Aston, during a raid in 1996.

The yield from the crop would have been 75kg, worth an estimated Pounds 175,000, even at 1997 street prices, said prosecutor Nick Tatlow.

The shed was fitted with reflective polythene and sophisticated heating, ventilation and watering systems.

Mr Tatlow alleged the equipment had been supplied by Simon Nurser, the former boyfriend of one of the coaccused, Kate Dobson.

She and three other men, John Pyne, Replica thomas wylde Keith Allsopp and Craig Whitts were convicted in 1998 of involvement in the cannabis factory.

Nurser, aged 43, now of Castell Close, Seabridge, Newcastle, denies a charge of conspiracy to cultivate cannabis.

Mr Tatlow told the jury at Stafford Crown Court the charge dates back to the execution of a search warrant at The Poplars Farm, Ivetsey Bank, on December Fake Gucci 3, 1996.

Officers found the chicken shed kitted out for cultivation and 480 plants growing and a further 450 cuttings in a nursery area.

The shed had been sold to businessman Pyne.

Between January and April 1996, Pyne was involved in buying the equipment and the cannabis factory was believed to have been up and running by April that year.

Mr Tatlow alleged that Nurser supplied much of the horticultural equipment and "would have had to provide technical advice".

Nurser's involvement ended months before the police raid. In July, 1996, he split up with Dobson and moved away. When he left, she carried on without him.

The trial is continuing.
